Charles H. Alden founded the Alden Shoe Company in 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts. The company added children's shoes to its lineup of men's shoes and custom boots.
The Alden Shoe Company survived the Great Depression when many other shoe manufacturers failed and adhered to its values as other shoe companies looked far afield for cheap manufacturing opportunities in the post-war economy. Alden thrived by concentrating on high-quality men's shoes rather than lower-quality mass markets.
Still a family-owned business, Alden is the last of the original New England shoe manufacturers still in operation.
